What Causes Varicose Veins?
There are two main types of varicose veins. The engorged, bluish veins that look like twisted ropes are what most people identify as varicose veins. They almost always develop in the legs and are more common in women than men. This type of varicose vein occurs when the veins aren’t functioning properly.
Veins act like one-way highways that transport blood back to the heart from different parts of the body. They have valves that open and close to keep the blood from flowing backward. But when these valves fail, blood starts pooling in the veins instead of traveling toward the heart. Varicose veins are more common in the lower extremities because they are the farthest away from your heart, and gravity makes it harder for blood to flow upward.
Spider veins, medically known as telangiectasis, are a milder variation of varicose veins that look like thin, threadlike patterns that appear red, blue, or purple in color. They develop for the same reasons as regular varicose veins, but tend to be smaller and closer to the surface of the skin.
Plain and simple, if you have veins, you are at risk of developing varicose veins. But these factors may increase your likelihood of getting them even more:
- Genetics — spider and varicose veins run in families, so if one or both of your parents has them, you’ll probably get them at some point, too
- Being overweight or obese
- Sitting or standing for prolonged periods
- Having naturally thin skin
- Smoking
- Pregnancy
- Hormonal changes
- The natural aging process

Am I a Candidate for Sclerotherapy?
If you have spider veins that are itchy, painful, or just plain ugly, you are a candidate for varicose vein treatment in Miami.
A cosmetic dermatology expert will evaluate the state and appearance of your legs during your initial consultation at our luxury medical boutique. They’ll recommend the most appropriate course of action based on what they see; small to medium spider veins can be successfully erased with laser therapy. And sclerotherapy is an excellent option for fading larger veins.
Both solutions are minimally invasive and produce extraordinary results in as little as one session, though most patients prefer to stick with two or three for optimum results. You may not be a candidate for varicose vein treatment if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a history of blood clots or suffer from a clotting disorder
- Have extremely large veins that need to be surgically removed

Your Treatment Options
Aside from quick fixes, like applying self-tanner to help camouflage the appearance of spider or varicose veins, the only permanent solution to erase them altogether is to have them professionally removed.
Your Dr. Patty Miami skincare specialist will help you determine which treatment is ideal for you. Both treatments are excellent for reducing the appearance of varicose veins and dramatically improving the texture, tone, and appearance of your legs.
Sclerotherapy: This treatment involves injecting a liquid or foaming solution directly into the vein via an ultra-thin needle. It’s one of the most satisfying procedures to watch because you can literally see the veins disappear right in front of your eyes!
The scientific term for the solution injected during sclerotherapy is a “sclerosing” agent. It is made up of concentrated salt and works by irritating the lining of poorly functioning veins, which eventually makes them shrink and collapse. Then, the vein walls will stick together and form scar tissue, forcing the blood to “switch lanes” and reroute itself back to the heart through other healthy veins nearby.
Laser vein removal: Lasers target the pigment in the vein to cause controlled vascular damage. This causes the vessel to scar over and close up the vein. Once closed, it will no longer be viable and disappear over time.

Varicose Vein Treatment FAQs
Does Varicose Vein Treatment Hurt?
Yes! Once a vein has been injected or zapped with lasers, it will no longer be viable and eventually disappear for good. Bear in mind, though, that you can get new varicose veins, especially if you have a genetic predisposition.
At Dr. Patty Miami, your skincare specialist will provide you with a customized aftercare protocol that includes diet and lifestyle modifications to help you keep varicose veins from forming in the future.
Are the Results Permanent?
Our varicose vein treatments in Miami don’t require any downtime at all. You just have to avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise for 24 hours post-treatment and steer clear of saunas and hot showers for a week.
